Why are my credit scores all different? - The Help Desk - Personal ...

Why are the credit scores that I get from the three major credit report agencies different from the score that a financial institution uses when I apply for a loan? Why are the scores different on all three bureaus' reports even when pulled on exactly the same day? ? Curtis S.

The three major credit reporting agencies?Equifax, Experian and TransUnion?use proprietary algorithms to generate your credit score. And your lender may have its own way of crunching credit scores. So even though each credit rating is based on the same information, the numbers from each agency or lender may be slightly different.

"Each agency feels that they have the best way to score and provide risk assessment," says Norm Magnuson, vice president of public affairs at the Consumer Data Industry Association, the credit bureau trade association in Washington, D.C.

Other differences in credit score may arise from discrepancies in your report. Banks and credit bureaus may update that information at different times, although they are required by law to do so once every 30 days. Magnuson says that the difference in timing of an update can lead to variations in your credit score.

Camouflage of moths: Moths actively seek out best hiding places

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Moths are iconic examples of camouflage. Their wing coloration and patterns are shaped by natural selection to match the patterns of natural substrates, such as a tree bark or leaves, on which the moths rest. But, according to recent findings, the match in the appearance was not all in their invisibility.

Despite a long history of research on these iconic insects, whether moths behave in a way to increase their invisibility has not been determined. A research team from the Laboratory of Behavioral Ecology and Evolution at the Seoul National University has conducted an experiment to directly answer this question. Chang-ku Kang, Jong-yeol Moon, Sang-im Lee and Piotr Jablonski have found out that moths walk on the tree bark until they settle down to rest; the insects seem to actively search for a place and a body position that makes them practically invisible.

Instead of placing moth specimens on a tree bark in various positions to see how body orientation of moths make them invisible to birds, which has been done by several researchers, "we let the moths to do the job for us" says Changku Kang, the PhD student who conducted the experiment. The researchers let inchworm moths of two species (Jankowskia fuscaria and Hypomycis roboraria) land on tree bark and freely choose the final resting spot and body orientation. Many moths did not remain at the spot of landing. They walked around with stretched wings as if they were looking for that one perfect spot that may make them invisible to predators.

To determine whether this final spot indeed made the moth really invisible, the researchers photographed each moth at its landing spot (initial spot) and at the final spot at which the moth decided to rest. Next, the researchers asked people to try to locate the moth from the photograph as quickly as possible. People had more difficulty finding the moths at their final spots than the same moths at their initial landing spots.

Amazingly, this was even true for the species (Hypomecis roboraria) that only changed its resting spot on the tree bark without changing its body orientation. Therefore, the researchers concluded, that moths seems to actively choose the spot that makes them invisible to predators. How do they know how to become invisible? The research team is now trying to answer this question as the next step.

How To Make Your Ex Fall In Love With You Again - Top Techniques

So you want to make your ex fall in love with you again. Well, it is possible, but you have to make sure that you go about it in the right way. The proper avenue to take is the one that uses human psychology and understands why we act the way that we do, only then can you understand what makes the opposite sex tick, and what will make them love you again.

In the process of learning to get back your ex, it is very important that you see things from a different angle altogether. At this point in time only one thing seems all important to you: how the two of you can come together again. However, you should be more focused on what your ex needs rather than just concentrating on what you need, this is the trick.

It is most likely that your ex does not want you right now. The very fact that your ex initiated the breakup was because they seemed to have fallen out of love with you. Rest assured that nothing much is going to happen until and unless you can show them that you are worthy of being dated by your ex once again.

Now, how can you make this happen? The only way is to bring back the magic that was there in the early days of your relationship. Everything about the two of you was new and lovely when you were just discovering one another. You need to travel back in time and show your ex that everything can once again become amazing and awesome between the two of you.

Bring Back the Magic of Those Days

Do you still remember the exciting times when you had just met each other and started to go out on dates? Wasn't it purely magical to be with one another? If you are having these feelings, be sure that your ex does too. Your ex also remembers those fun times, those romantic episodes among all the other happy, fond instances, and everything else that marked your happy relationship.

If you have dated for quite a while, it was during those times that you developed strong feelings and the bonding for one another. Your togetherness at every instance bonded you together. Every festive occasion, every birthday, and every ski trip brought you closer as a couple. Now, things do not look as good as they used to be. There have been more instances that both of you would like to forget rather than remember. Whatever took place between the two of you helped to make you forget the fact that together you are a couple of great potential.

Bringing your ex back into your life once again is all about creating a need for you once more. It is not merely enough to pour out to your ex as to how badly you need them in your life; the reunion would be more valuable if you can make your ex want you badly enough than just thrusting yourself into their life.

Make Your Ex Miss You and Need You Again

What is it that you need to do for your ex to miss you? The answer is simple: make yourself unavailable. Subtle detachment techniques will definitely make your ex think more about you. Your ex does not see you in those places they used to in earlier times. Your ex looks around only to find you missing. You are not available easily. You do not call, text or email as much as you used to. Well, there is no option for your ex but to miss you.

At this point it is important to note that using detachment techniques is only half the battle won. You also need to know that it is important to reconnect. You have to make an entry into their lives in a manner that reflects positively. It is, in fact, more than just a little tricky. A detailed plan that guides you as to how to step into the life of your ex and when to do it such that the entry is subtle, smooth and effective is the need of the hour.

If you are still in love with your ex and want them back in your life at the earliest, it is best that you do not take any chances for it is not worth it. Work with a plan in mind and do not make haste. Know exactly what moves you have to make and when you should make them. Just like anything else in life, the more knowledge you have about the problem at hand, you will be equipped to deal with it in a better fashion and work out a neat solution. Working to a plan always improves the odds of your getting back together again.

Love and Hate Are but Divided by a Thin Line

You can, in fact, choose to be a little happy if your ex seems to hate you after the break up. Be assured that this not the worst sign about your ex that you have noticed. Well, not that you want your ex to hate you as it reduces the chances of you coming together. With emotions not under control immediately after a break-up there is not much that you can expect in this situation from your ex. You are right in feeling angry and hurt at the hateful feelings that your ex chooses to show you. But you should be happy that your ex has been significantly affected by the breakup and his feelings for you. Would you have liked it if your ex did not seem to be bothered at all about the entire break-up whatsoever?

Specific actions that you can take at the right time can turn this seemingly obvious hatred of your ex into love once again. It requires that you know what to do exactly and when to do it. It is also a matter of being able to handle your ex's feelings in a sensitive manner.

What To Do Next

It is all about timing and how well you use it to get your ex back. Moving too fast can be threatening with the result that they will try to move further away from you. On the other hand, if you are too slow, you ex may get the feeling that they do not hold your interest any longer. Therefore, it is very important that you know how to handle this situation.

Yet another helpful suggestion is to be able to read the signs ex has moved on. In such a case, going after your ex would be a mere waste of time as they would be no longer interested in you. But make sure that you get the facts right. It pays to observe what your ex says or does so that you do not lose your pride.

You also need to follow advice that is gender specific. You need to be able to get inside the head of your ex and work out how they feel, why they act the way that they do, and what they want from relationships. That is why targeted advice works the best. That being said, guys you will need to read the signs she still loves you. Also, girls you will need to read the signs he still loves you.

A Quick Guide On Cleaning Headstones, Memorials And Mausoleums

One of the most overlooked areas of stone care is the cemetery. If you have ever visited a cemetery and looked around, what you would see is that many of the headstones are in poor condition. The reason for this is that the cemetery is not responsible for the care of the headstones or memorials. They are only responsible for keeping up the grounds that surround them. This makes the family members responsible for the cleaning and the care of the stone.

The other challenge is that most of the family members are not going to know how to clean the headstone properly and the cemetery staff usually won?t be able to help in this area. There is also not a lot of information out there on this subject. Here are a few basic things to consider when cleaning those precious headstones.

First things to know is if you are not comfortable or you are afraid you may ruin the stone, contact a service expert that may be able to assist you in this area. They can ensure the work is done properly and professionally.

The next step is to determine and find out what type of stone you will be working with. Generally, these stones are made up of either granite, marble and occasionally limestone and sandstone. It is important to know which stone it is because certain cleaning chemicals can be very destructive when used on the wrong stone. Acidic cleaners may be fine for granite, but with etch and dissolve marble and limestone. So don?t just rush out and buy any stone cleaner.

Marble

If you are dealing with marble stone, then it is extremely important that you stay away from acidic chemicals such as vinegar, cleaners containing lemon, masonry cleaners, CLR, or tile cleaners and various mildew removers. Check the product ingredients before using. Remember, stay away from anything acidic. A good marble cleaner and polish will do the trick, as it is safe on all cemetery stone surfaces. Please remember that when you are cleaning this stone, stay away from any harsh abrasives as well as wire brushes and any hard tools or cleaning materials.

Granite

Granite, unlike marble, is a much harder stone. It is also highly resistant to acids and will not etch or leave dull spots like marble. Granite is a great choice for headstones because of these reasons. A good granite cleaner should be used to clean this stone.

Limestone

Limestone is another choice used for headstones and memorials. Limestones are made up of calcite from shells, coral and other sea debris. It is considered sedimentary rock. The coarse grain of some limestones give them excellent durability, but here again they are susceptible to acid attack. Drop a drop of vinegar or place a lemon wedge on such a stone and it will leave a mark etched into the surface where it has dissolved away the stone within a few minutes.

Sandstone

The stone can be found in older headstones and is rarely used today. This stone is coarse and loose in texture. Sandstone is very resistant to acid and is rarely polished, but can be damaged with abrasives or brushes.

SEALING

Once cleaned, one is ready to seal. Sealing prevents discoloration should a colored liquid be allowed to seep into the stone. In effect, seals are designed to minimize staining. Once cleaned, you may want to periodically seal the surface with a stone sealer.

So here are just a few of the things to stay away from when cleaning your precious stone:

1. Abrasives

2. Acids

3. Pressure Washing

4. Heat and Torches

5. Miscellaneous Chemical Cleaners

There are many good cleaners and polishes out there that you can use to get the job done properly. Once cleaned, seal.

Remember, if you?re not comfortable doing the job, a stone care professional is just a quick phone call away.

Occupy Monsanto | GM Soy in Aquaculture: Possibly a Dangerous ...

Soy is very much present in the standard American diet today. It is an ingredient in most processed foods, and can also be found in meat products. Corporate giant Monsanto has then created genetically modified (GM) soy, which is engineered to protect plants from weeds. While the world is led to believe that not only soy but other genetically modified organisms (GMOs) contribute to good health, the truth is they can wreak havoc on your health and in the entire ecosystem.

The Dangers of GM Soy to Health and the Environment

Genetically engineered soybeans are especially designed to withstand the Monsanto-created Roundup herbicide, which is aimed to ?protect? the crops from weeds and pests. This means that they can resist heavy doses of the herbicide without being harmed. Although the Roundup herbicide was created to protect crops, it has backfired, causing devastating effects on human health as well as on the environment.

Studies show that GMOs cause reproductive and fertility problems in animals, that by the third generation, these animals have lost the ability to reproduce. Women who consume GM soy can also experience hormonal disruptions, such as abnormal levels of estrogen, an overabundance of estrogen activity, and damage to their pituitary gland. Additional research also links the consumption of GM soy to hormonal problems in men, who may experience loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.

The only published human feeding experiment on GM foods shows that when consumed, the added gene to GM soy transfers into the DNA of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Here, it continues to function. Even if you abstain from GM soy for years, the gene may still linger in your stomach, as potentially allergenic proteins are produced in your intestines.

GM soy, as well as other GMO products, has been linked to several health issues such as cancer, allergies, reproductive problems, and the formation of resistant bacteria. It is also important to note that in certain countries, farmers are subjected to pesticide poisoning and experience myriads of health and environmental consequences.

How GM Soy in Aquaculture Can Impact Marine Life

Even with the dangers attached to GM soy, Monsanto and Cargill, two of the biggest players in the soy industry, are planning to turn soy into feed for factory-farmed fish all over the world, saying that this practice will be ?sustainable.?

The factory-farmed fish industry or aquaculture is responsible for delivering half of the world?s supply of fish. Similar to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), this type of fish farming is linked to several problems, including lack of space, pollution, and unnatural fish feed.

This shows to be alarming, judging from the fact that GMOs have irreversible effect on humans ? what more in the marine ecosystem? If farmed fish are fed soy, the possible dangers are:

  • The contamination of the marine ecosystem with GMOs ? According to Food & Water Watch, this practice will allow GM soy to enter the marine food chain, permanently contaminating oceans with problems. Even if these are only fed to farmed fish, unconsumed soy can flow directly out of the cage and into the oceans. 94 percent of the soy produced in the US is genetically modified.
  • Higher levels of pollution ? Oceans will become more polluted with the feeding of GM soy to marine creatures because these fish produce more waste compared to other fish. Once these wastes are released to the ocean, residues from the herbicide used on soy can leak out into the waters. A growing body of research states that glyphosate-based herbicide is toxic to aquatic wildlife.
  • Marine life will be threatened by corporate interests ? There is evidence showing the ill effects of GM soy on both humans and animals. Nonetheless, Monsanto is now planning on using their GMOs for aquaculture. They wish to achieve this and partner with Cargill, which has an industrial fish-farming division. If this plan goes into motion, issues concerning the future and sustainability of marine life will increase.

What You Can Do in this Trying GMO Times

If this is the case, what is the possible solution? Unless you know that the fish you are about to consume was obtained from pure and uncontaminated waters, you should lessen your consumption of factory-farmed fish.

Boycotting GMOs is another solution. Here are some ways in order to avoid factory-fish and GMO dangers:

  1. Support local farmers by buying from local grocers. You should consider buying more organic and fair-trade products.
  2. Choose only foods that are certified organic. This ensures that the product is GMO-free.
  3. Consider growing your own garden, or help out at a community garden. This gives you the assurance that your food is safe. Plus, you can educate your kids about food!
  4. Go only to restaurants that purchase locally-produced food.
  5. Educate yourself more about GMO issues and spread the word. You should be aware of and take part in broad coalitions? efforts for a GMO labeling law.

Tel Aviv University uncovers trove of gold coins in 13th century castle

A team of researchers from Tel Aviv University has uncovered a hoard of real-life buried treasure at the Crusader castle of Arsur (also known as Apollonia), a stronghold located between the ancient ports of Jaffa and Caesarea, in use from 1241 to its destruction in 1265. The hoard, comprised of 108 gold coins, mostly dinars dated to the Fatimid Period (ca. 900 to 1100 AD), was discovered in a pot by a university student. The coins bear the names of sultans and blessings, and usually include a date and a mint name that indicates where a coin was struck.

This fascinating find is the first of its kind, says Prof. Oren Tal, director of the excavation and Chairman of TAU's Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures. "The scientific value is unprecedented. This is the first hoard of gold coins that we have in Israel that we can date to the Crusader period."

Prof. Tal believes that the coins provide an important clue to how large-scale economic transactions were made in the Crusader period. "They were not afraid to use older coins in order to complete large transactions and run large-scale businesses," he said, indicating that this "pot of gold" may be one of a group hidden in the castle, remnants of Arsur's role as a business center where industrial and agricultural goods were traded.

Crusader economics

According to Prof. Tal, the discovery adds to the debate over gold circulation during the time of the Crusades, a series of military incursions into the region to establish Christianity. It puts Fatimid-period coins, minted by Egyptian Sultans in the 10th and 11th centuries, in a Crusader context. Their use of gold from an earlier period is somewhat surprising, given the importance placed on coin minting.

Typically, societies mint their own coins, especially for the completion of large transactions, because it impacts more than just economics it has marketing and public relations value. From a social and political standpoint, the minting of coins shows that a culture has the wealth and ability to make its own currency, feeding into a sense of independence as a people, cultural self-definition, and a collective identity, explains Prof. Tal.

Though historically priceless, the actual cash value of the coins is difficult to pin down, says Prof. Tal. A document found in the Cairo Genizah hints at the worth of the hoard, suggesting that two gold dinars, the face value on the coins that were found, can provide sufficiently for an extended family for one month.

Assuming the extended family includes a father, mother, sons, daughters, and their spouses and children, this could include 12 to 24 people. If 20 people can make their living for a month on two gold coins, the horde that was discovered could sustain 50 families for 30 days, or five families for approximately one year, all depending on the standard of living.

A time capsule

Arsur is a perfect time capsule due to its short period of occupation, says Prof. Tal. The findings from the castle, which in addition to the coins include items such as pottery, glass and metal objects, arrowheads, and catapult stones, are a window into a specific historical period. They help researchers to develop a working knowledge of the material culture of the Crusaders, and provide clues to interactions between the Islamic and Christian worlds.

The seigniory of Arsur was leased to the Military Order of the Hospitallers in 1261. The Order originally arrived in the Holy Land in the 12th century as a group of orderlies serving European pilgrims. As evidenced by their use of the castle as a storage place for their profits, Arsur was one of their most important strongholds. In 1265, the castle was attacked by the Egyptian Sultan Baybars, and after withstanding a 40-day siege, the castle was eventually conquered. It has remained uninhabited since then.

In 1265, the castle was attacked by the Egyptian Sultan Baybars, and after withstanding a 40-day siege, the castle was eventually conquered. It has remained uninhabited since then.

Study: Green homes sell for 9% more in CA #realestate @wendykoch

This is important for landlords to know because even regardless of views concerning Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW), tenants and landlords often pay various utility bills that over the life of a lease or ownership may more than eat up the difference between a lower rent or purchase price for a non- or less-green property versus higher for greener.

Tenants and landlords should also consider the costs/benefits of retrofitting already leased and purchased properties.

Green-certified homes sell for 9% more than regular homes in California and their premium is highest in the hottest and most eco-minded areas, says a report today.
[...]
The study finds the premium is also highest in the hottest places, suggesting buyers value green labels for the pragmatic reason of lower utility bills.
[...]
In Seattle, they sold for 8.5% more per square foot and were on the market 22% less time from September 2007 to December 2009, according to Seattle-based GreenWorks Realty. In the Portland, Ore., metro area, they sold for 12% more from May 2008 to April 2009, reports the Portland-based non-profit Earth Advantage Institute.

Traveling safe to Lebanon: is a travel insurance necessary?

Do you need a travel insurance for your next trip??Before you start designing your travel to Lebanon take five minutes to find information on the potential problems with that country

In Lebanon the crime rate is moderate, but both car theft and burglaries do occur. Violent crime and sexual assault are rare, although petty theft ? such as pick pocketing and purse snatching ? is common in crowded public areas. Police are responsive but often unable to effect a positive outcome. There are no special concerns with regard to targeted victimization of travelers in scams or confidence schemes.

With all that in mind take the time to choose your travel insurance with care.

HBT: Crawford to Marlins for Ramirez, Bell?

UPDATE: Olney just killed everyone?s buzz. BUT I STILL BELIEVE, MAN!

2:01 PM: This sounds like a total hot mess of a trade rumor, but I freakling LOVE hot messes, so:

Nightengale has updated it with a longer story citing three sources. Wowzers. Where to begin.

On a dollars and cents scale, this would easily be one of the biggest trades in baseball history, as Crawford, Ramirez and Bell are owed nearly $240 million among them. ?It would also involve a big problem (Bell stinks this year) a lesser, but more chronic problem (Ramirez?s increasingly erratic production and always interesting attitude) and an absolute sell-low guy (Crawford, who is TWO GAMES back from injuries and still near the beginning of a monster deal).

Given the ascension of Will Middlebrooks, this would certainly mean that Ramirez would be a shortstop again. Which would make his bat more valuable, but it?s a position one wonders how long he can handle. Crawford?s game may be better suited to Marlins Park, but again, why the Red Sox would give up on him now when his stock can only rise? It?s not like the Marlins are going to take that whole contract on, are they?

Such a trade would raise more questions than it would answer. I don?t get it, and I suspect that this is just one of those things people shoot the breeze about more than they seriously contemplate it.

But if it were to happen? Wow!

As mushrooms evolve to live with trees, they give up DNA associated with decomposing cellulose

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? Harvard researchers are unlocking the evolutionary secrets of one of the world's most recognizable groups of mushrooms, and to do it, they're using one of the most comprehensive fungal "family trees" ever created.

As reported in paper published July 18 in PLoS ONE, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Anne Pringle and Ben Wolfe, a Post-Doctoral Fellow in FAS Center for Systems Biology, studied the genetics of more 100 species of Amanita mushrooms -- about one-sixth of the genus' total diversity -- to create an elaborate phylogeny showing how each species is related to one another.

Arguably the most widely-recognized group of mushrooms in the world, Amanita mushrooms have appeared in popular culture ranging from Fantasia to the Super Mario Brothers video games. Though it includes a number of edible species, such as the Amanita caesarea, the group is probably best known for its many toxic species, including the death-cap mushroom.

Armed with their family tree, Pringle and Wolfe were able to determine that Amanita evolution has largely been away from species that help decompose organic material and toward those that live symbiotically on trees and their roots. More interestingly, they found that the transition came at a steep price -- the loss of the genes associated with breaking down cellulose.

"There had been earlier suggestions that this type of gene loss might be taking place, but our study is the first precise test of that hypothesis," Pringle said. "The idea makes sense -- if you're going to actively form a cooperative relationship with a tree, you probably shouldn't simultaneously be trying to break it apart and eat it. But it's a very tricky dance to form these kinds of tight, cooperative interactions, and I think this work shows there is a cost associated with that. You have to change, you have to commit, and it can become a sort of gilded cage -- these mushrooms are very successful, but they're stuck where they are."

In addition to many species which are housed in the Farlow Herbarium, located at the Harvard University Herbaria, Wolfe spent months tracking rare species in far-flung locations like London and Hawaii.

After extracting DNA from the samples, Wolfe used the genetic codes of four different genes to determine how the various species are related to one another. He then used a process called ancestral state reconstruction to show that the mushrooms have switched from being decomposers to being symbiotic with trees only once in their evolutionary history. Once the mushrooms switched to this new symbiotic lifestyle, they didn't go back to their free-living past.

Ultimately, Pringle said, the paper highlights one reason she finds such symbiotic partnerships "intrinsically interesting" -- for all their apparent benefits, the cost can be high.

"I think the really interesting thing is this idea that once you become symbiotic, some of your machinery is lost," she said. "It seems like a dead end in some ways -- you have to make this change to enter this niche, but once you're there, you can't go back -- you've lost the capacity to be free-living."

Rev. Anthony Lee Gets Tested For HIV In The Pulpit To Promote AIDS Awareness

At Union Seminary in 1998, the Rev. Anthony Lee helped lead a worship service on World AIDS Day. Tony (as he was called back then) described the pressures of violence and poverty, along with AIDS, in his African-American community in Washington, D.C., and called for a holistic medical, social and spiritual cure.

Today, Lee is back in the D.C. area as the founding pastor of a thriving church called Community of Hope, located in Prince George's County. He is again working in a largely African-American community that suffers from rates of HIV/AIDS similar to some countries in Africa.

Nearly half of the 1 million people in the United States infected with HIV are black men, women and children -- even though African Americans make up just 12.6 percent of the population.

Lee is on the AIDS working group for the Prince George's County Executive Health Commission, but his most powerful, effective and radically spiritual work happens within the context of his church.

Four times a year, Lee steps onto the pulpit and gets tested for HIV in front of his entire congregation. It is just one of the ways that Community Of Hope is a place of healing, and Lee offers a model of ministry that every church can learn from.

In connection with the 19th International AIDS Conference that starts on July 22, HuffPost caught up Lee to learn about his church and its Gospel-centered approach to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

How long has Community of Hope been around, and who are the people who worship there?

Community of Hope started six years ago in a night club right on the D.C.-Prince George's border, in an area with some of the worst statistics around violence, schools and HIV/AIDS. We felt that the church was at its best when needs were at their most.

We have a range of folks who are part of the church, including people in great need, working-class, as well as the black intelligentsia. We have people working on their GEDs and we also have a heap of people with Ph.Ds. Everyone is welcome. Our tag line is: We don't care who you are, what you've done, who you did it with. We don't care if you did it last night, or woke up doing it this morning. You are in the right place in the right time to become all that God has called you to become.

Am I right in remembering that the night club was a strip club?

Yeah, the club had strip nights.

And so you would take down the poles and put up pews? How did that work?

[Laughs] We had folding chairs. The funny thing is that we brought in our own sound system because we didn't think their sound system was strong enough. We would put a white sheet over the alcohol, but we couldn't cover up everything, so the vodka sign would be glowing during the service. And we would have church right there.

We weren't intending to start the church in a club, but the deal we had for somewhere else fell through. I was disappointed, but my father in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Granger Browning, was excited.

Rev. Browning told me: "Tony, you don't understand, there are going to to be two groups of people who say the same sentence when you start the church. The 'super holy' people are going to question, "What kind of church would start in a nightclub?" But the people who need to come to church are going say, "Wow, what kind of church would start in a nightclub?"

When was the first time you recognized that HIV/AIDS was an issue you wanted to deal with head-on in your church?

We outgrew the club in about 9 months and we moved into our current space on New Year's Eve, which was our first Sunday, and we did HIV testing that first Sunday. We wanted the community and the congregation to know that the blessing of having a permanent location wasn't just for us to shout -- it was for us to work .

Can you tell me a little bit about your outreach teams and the fact that they hand out condoms?

When you look at the numbers of HIV and AIDS in our area, you can see that they are really bad. So we do testing, we have a barbershop and beauty shop outreach where we leave harm reduction information, we do trainings on HIV 101, and then we also have club tours. That is where our street team goes into the clubs handing out prevention material and condoms. Our tag line in the club outreach is: God Loves You. Love Yourself Enough To Protect Yourself.

What do you say to people who insist that handing out condoms is only encouraging bad behavior?

So, at Community of Hope we preach about abstinence and about sexual purity as the standard. But we also have to deal with the reality that everyone is not living the standard. And we have to give the resources and the information so that, even if they are not going to live up to the standard they are not putting themselves at risk for STDs and HIV.

For us it is a both/and; it doesn't have to be an either/or.

HIV is a preventable disease. We have to get out there and be relevant enough and realistic enough to deal with it. We aren't going to stick our heads in the sand and act as if people aren't having sex and engaging in risky behavior.

You work shows caring about people's actual bodies, that their physical bodies matter, not just their spirits -- that those two parts are related.

In scripture you have Jesus ministering to people where they were in their physical situation. If you look at the miracles, some of them were around food and some around physical healing; and that allowed there to be teaching around the kingdom of heaven and people being able to receive it.

For us it is about dealing with the whole person. Not just this spirit person but dealing with their actual practical reality in life. It is not just HIV stuff, it is school system, it is about addressing the policy issues.

If we don't impact the culture, systems and institutions in which people live, then it is very hard to talk to people about what they are supposed to do and not do in their spiritual lives.

Tell me about that woman I met who looked like she was out of central casting for "Upstanding Black Church Lady". She doesn't have buttons or look like what you might think of an AIDS activist, but she is influential in your HIV work, right?

She runs it. Her name Rev. Laverne Harley, an ordained minister, coming out of the Pentecostal, COGIC [Church of God in Christ] background. She is that kind of old-school, charismatic sister/preacher. But she is also doing amazing work in the community with victims of homicides, homelessness and HIV and AIDS.

She doesn't look like someone who would be out in the trenches, but she is out there at such a level and most of what we do is because of her connectedness and vision.

So tell me why you first decided to get tested in the pulpit?

We realized from the first service that we needed to create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable being tested. Because if you are at church and the church is preaching abstinence, but then you go up and get tested and you're not married, what you are saying is, "Oh, I've been doing something." But what we talk about at Community of Hope is that getting tested is a sign of leadership.

We say that even if you have not had sex in a long time, we want you to get tested so you can help create an atmosphere in which someone who 'got some' last night can go get tested and not feel like people are going to be in their business.

So, that needed to happen from the pulpit on down. So, myself, all my ministerial leadership, all the leaders in the church, get tested. We had to shape a culture where there wasn't a stigma around getting tested.

What happens when someone does test positive?

We have partnership with various full service testing organizations. So it is all confidential. People know that the Pastor is not going to find out if they test positive unless they want him to. So if they do test positive, then our collaborative partners take them right there into a full servie model to walk them throught this process, while also lifting up the church as a resource.

The church is available if they want to reach out and talk to one of us, but it is up to the individual. We don't do professional HIV case management, but we collaborate with people who do.

Our tagline for testing is: Know where you stand. And who you stand on. Get tested, but whichever way it goes, know that you can stand on God.

In the upcoming AIDS Conference there is talk of a vaccine. How do you see your church moving forward?

I'll be going to the conference and following all the pieces. It is a significant crisis for us that we can't afford not to follow what's happening.

    Another Abortion Showdown in Virginia

Last Spring, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was a pretty credible candidate for the vice presidency. Then he tripped over a trans-vaginal ultrasound bill that enraged women throughout the commonwealth and turned?almost overnight?into a great big political cautionary tale. As Alexander Burns explained in Politico, McDonnell?s early support of a law that would have mandated an invasive ultrasound procedure for women seeking abortions ?turned McDonnell?s national political fortunes upside down.? (He later switched positions, signing a modified version of that law that did away with the now politically-toxic internal probe.) McDonnell not only became a walking human punch line for a few days, but he also may have finally managed to turn the commonwealth into a blue state: President Obama appears to have opened up a 20-point lead over Mitt Romney among women voters, who, presumably, didn?t want the state probing them for no coherent medical reason.
