iPhone 5 paint may chip, Apple exec says that's 'normal'

Since the iPhone 5 hit store shelves on Friday, complaints about the propensity of the?device's paint?job to scratch and chip have started flooding in.?But according to an email exchange Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller allegedly had with a customer such cosmetic issues are "normal."

According to?9to5 Mac's Seth Weintraub, one of the blog's readers sent an email to Schiller, pointing out that his iPhone 5 is showing "some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone."?He asked what he and others who are seeing this issue can do and whether there are any plans to fix it.

The reply Schiller sent, according to this customer, explained that "[a]ny aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal."

Schiller's somewhat brief?reply reminds us?of the time when late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told a?customer who complained about the iPhone 4 reception issues he experienced when his hand covered the device's antennas that he should "[j]ust avoid holding it that way."

Of course, that email preceded what is now referred to as "Antennagate" and?a press conference during which Apple addressed these reception issues and offered every iPhone 4 owner a free "Bumper" case.

Just like the iPhone 4 reception issues reported back then, the cosmetic issues reported in the last few days?appear to only affect some iPhone 5 owners. NBC News tech?editor Wilson Rothman and I got the?iPhone 5 on the same day,?but while his is already showing wear (as you can see in the images above) after spending time in and out of his jeans pocket, my own device, also black, is still in pristine condition. And that's after it?spent a lot of time in a purse pocket along with other smartphones, loose change and my house keys.

Because of the strange way our experiences parallel the iPhone 4 reception woes, we can't help but wonder if we'll soon be hearing more on this,?possibly even from Apple, which has yet to reply to our inquiry. Given the fact that you can't upgrade hardware as easily as software (or maps), there's certainly a chance of a "Paintgate" in our near future.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Cancer deaths 'to fall 17% by 2030' - Crewe Chronicle

Cancer death rates in the UK are set to fall by almost 17% by 2030, experts predict.

Better diagnosis and treatment is the main reason for the change, according to the charity Cancer Research UK, but the improved outlook is also said to reflect the fact that fewer people are smoking.

In 2010 an estimated 170 people in every 100,000 members of the general population died from cancer. Over the next 17 years this is forecast to fall to 142 per 100,000.

Ovarian cancer is expected to see the biggest drop in numbers of patients dying, at 42.6%. Incidence of the disease is expected to reduce from 9.1 women per 100,000 to 5.3 per 100,000 by 2030.

Death rates for breast cancer are predicted to fall by 28%, for bowel cancer by 23% and prostate cancer by 16%.

A few cancers show a reverse trend, with larger numbers of people dying. Death rates for oral cancer are likely to rise by 22%, as incidence rises from 2.9 to 3.5 per 100,000 people. For liver cancer, death rates are predicted to go up by 39%, with incidence increasing from 4.2 to 5.9 per 100,000.

Professor Peter Sasieni, Cancer Research UK epidemiologist at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "Our latest estimations show that for many cancers, adjusting for age, death rates are set to fall dramatically in the coming decades. And what's really encouraging is that the biggest cancer killers, lung, breast, bowel, and prostate, are part of this falling trend.

"Because old age is the biggest risk factor for cancer and more people are living longer, they have a greater chance of developing and, unfortunately, dying from the disease. But overall the proportion, or rate, of those who die from cancer is falling."

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "We continue to rely on the public's generosity to drive progress. This helps us turn discoveries made in our science labs into new treatments and to carry out clinical trials to find the best ways to treat patients."

The figures were released in the run-up to Stand Up To Cancer, a fundraising partnership between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. The campaign will end with a live TV entertainment show on Friday October 19.

Macedonian, Greek Ministers Meet in New York :: Balkan Insight

Dimitris Avramopoulos [left] and Nikola Poposki [right] | Photo by: mfa.gov

The two ministers met for an unofficial conversation at Macedonia's request at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to reiterate their country?s stands.

After asserting that Greece had done its part towards resolving the dispute between the two states over Macedonia's name, Avramopoulos said it was time for the government in Skopje to do more.

?Things might have been different and even better in relations between us if the neighbouring country showed more respect on historically and culturally sensitive issues that are of particular importance to Greece,? Avramopoulos said in reference to Macedonia after the meeting.

Aside from the long-running dispute over Macedonia's name, Greece objects to Macedonia's more recent drive to lay claim to what Greece considers its own exclusive heritage.

For his part, Poposki repeated that Macedonia had no territorial claims against Greece, describing claims to the contrary as an ?artificially imposed perception?.

The fresh initiative comes at a time when the European Commission is about to release its annual report on Macedonia's progress towards EU membership.

The report, to be published on October 10, is expected to contain yet another recommendation for a start to EU accession talks - the fourth in a row.

However, without a solution to the "name" dispute at hand, the EU is unlikely to offer an actual start date for the talks, owing to the continuing Greek blockade.

Greece insists that use of the term "Macedonia" implies a territorial claim to its own northern province of the same name. Citing the unresolved issue, Greece has repeatedly blocked Macedonia?s progress towards both EU and NATO membership.

UN-brokered talks to overcome the long standing dispute have failed to result in a solution and there have been no substantial talks for over a year, partly owing to the complicated political situation in Greece.

Macedonia obtained EU candidate country status back in 2005, and the European Commission has recommended a start to accession talks since 2009.

'One step beyond' is EUPRIO's vision | euprio.eu

Smooth organisers: Ulla Regestad from Chalmers University of Technology (centre) with Helena ?berg from the University of Gothenburg and the retiring President Paolo Pomati

EUPRIO?S annual conference in Gothenburg marked the end of an era ? with Italy?s energetic and flamboyant Paolo Pomati handing over the Presidency to Denis Ancion, from Maastricht University.

Under Paolo?s four-year leadership, EUPRIO has more than just survived the recession: growing to 638 members, adopting a new constitution and reconstituting itself with a new registered address at KU Leuven, Belgium.

But while it now has a more formal structure, the 2012 conference hosted by Chalmers University and the University of Gothenburg showed that EUPRIO has lost none of its appeal as a first-class gathering for communicators keen to learn new skills while having fun renewing old contacts and making new ones.

Both Paolo and Denis praised the smooth-efficiency of our Swedish hosts, saying 2012 was one of our best conferences ? not least because of the quality of the workshops and expert presenters who came from all over the world to share their knowledge of public engagement.

The conference theme: The social contract between universities and society was set by Ole Petter Ottersen, Rector of Oslo University. In his in an opening address ?Taking on the global challenges: the university mission redefined? Professor Ottersen spoke movingly about the impact of the Breivik massacre on Norwegian society and the strategic role of universities in defending democracy: http://euprio.eu/portfolio/ole-petter-ottersen/

The 235 delegates from 21 countries were treated to another first-class keynote speech in the closing session, when David Harper, Head of University Relations (Europe) for Google, spoke engagingly about Google?s dedication and passion to engage young people with science: http://euprio.eu/portfolio/david-harper/

Paolo, who now becomes Vice-President for a year, said: ?An outstanding conference is the best identity for an association; and I am leaving the responsibilities to Denis knowing that we did some good things during my years as President and with the absolute certainty that the new Presidency will do even better. It?s time to hail the sails again.?

EUPRIO's new President, Denis Ancion.

Denis thanked Paolo?s for leading EUPRIO through tough times and said that after much hard work ?it?s time to really make the new approach work for the long term?. His vision of ?One step beyond? aims to increase EUPRIO?s visibility on the national level in different European countries and turn EUPRIO into more than just an annual conference bringing members together intentionally.

Denis said he is delighted with the theme for next year?s conference, which will be hosted by the University of Kent in Great Britain.

The 2013 event will look at how university communications is rapidly changing, with internal audiences becoming crucial to successful branding and preparing for growing international competition.

?This change in importance of the internal audiences is a major challenge for communications departments and requires a change of culture and the need for new skills. More and more, reputation management will not only be directed at positioning the university for stakeholders externally, but shifting towards internal positioning. Our Kent conference will be central to this process.?

? The 2013 annual EUPRIO conference will be held at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, from 27-30 June, and focus on the best way to engage students, staff and alumni in university communications. The conference team is led by EUPRIO?s UK Steering Committee member Martin Herrema.

? See http://euprio.eu/conference/programme/ for the presentations made at EUPRIO 2012 in Gothenburg.

Poking fun at motherhood or mothers? And also, how white feminists ...

Jenny Allen?s piece, ?I?m a Mom? in The New Yorker is making fun of ?The Angel In The House? ? the way in which mothers are put on a pedestal but once up there are too precious to dirty themselves with money and things like, workplace entitlements and divorce court settlement conditions ? but eek, the article comes dangerously close to making fun of the mothers, themselves, who fall for the rhetoric. And while some of those women can be annoying they?re ultimately exploited by this rhetoric just like the rest of us.

You can sugarcoat that all you like, but Mrs. Romney chose not to, and I say good for her. Because, if you?re not a mom, you may not be a bad person, but you are an extraneous person. If there were something great about being a woman who is not a mom, something that added anything to America, if there were even one teeny-weeny example of how the non-moms hold America together the way moms do, Mrs. Romney would mention the childless gals. But she doesn?t, because there isn?t.

The article makes a very important point about the marginalising of women who are not mothers and the ways in which we render invisible their unpaid caring work and contributions to the community, but by the end of the piece Allen is cracking a joke about the over-involved mother and I can be prone to rolling my eyes at this mother, too. But I do so while relying on a shitload of her free labour, that she pours into my kid?s school to make it all so super; no small effort when the school is one of those public, under-funded types; and I do this while being busy running off to my paid job. I think I probably give something back to this mother in other ways by fighting from within the system for mothers to be more visible and included in workplaces, but the point is we?re all enmeshed in this system that ultimately exploits mothers.

Allen?s piece is targeting the recent political use of this motherhood rhetoric in Michelle Obama?s and Ann Romney?s speeches. (The equivalent political slogan in Australia is the dreaded ?working family? ? a term that can be just as annoying and divisive). In considering the debate around the sloganeering of mothers it is worth reading this interesting piece at Clutch Magazine ? ?A Black Mom-in-Chief is Revolutionary: What White Feminists Get Wrong about Michelle Obama? ? because The Angel In The House was martyred but she was also white. The point Tami Winfrey Harris is making in her article is the same point some of you made in the comments on this post of mine ? ?How mothers are being positioned in Michelle Obama?s speech? - that is, that there is a fundamental difference between how white mothers have experienced and viewed the dangers of motherhood as compared to how black mothers have experienced and viewed the dangers of motherhood.

It is something I began to understand in reading the work of feminist mothers of colour and also by reading Prof Andrea O?Reilly?s work, which I talk about?here:

Consider this, white feminist motherhood has been preoccupied with how motherhood has trapped women whereas black feminist motherhood sees motherhood as a political act of resistance. This is because white mothers take preservation for granted in the dominant white culture. On the other hand, black mothers need to work hard to protect their children, teach their children how to protect themselves, ensure culture is passed on, and heal those around them who missed out on this kind of mothering. White mothers have a history of their lives being narrowed to the home and have consequently focused their fight on getting the choice to work outside the home, whereas black mothers, who were rarely able to indulge the question of whether to work or not, have instead been faced with a consistent struggle to have their femininity even recognised.

O?Reilly?s work ultimately led me to read much more of Toni Morrison?s work and I have talked about that all over the place on this blog (like, here and here and here and here), because the way Morrison defined motherhood as freedom was a profound insight for me. As I have previously discussed:

Even though my mothering, as a white mother, is not about preservation the way a black mother?s is there is something, still, that strikes a chord with me about the expression of motherhood as freedom. Black mothers and their feminist/womanist definitions of motherhood tap into a joy and liberation in the experience that white definitions frequently (but not always) miss. When American black mothers define motherhood they also tend to be more comfortable identifying the sense of ownership that can be fused with mothering. This is something white feminist mothers generally find difficult to acknowledge.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians Recap: Babies, New Boobs and Vasectomies on the Brain

This week on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Khloe really wanted a baby. Scott Disick, meanwhile, pondered whether he should keep producing them.

Khloe's baby fever stemmed from Kourt's after all, leading the former to reflect on the fact that it comes so easily for her sister, yet is so hard for her.

Khloe thus seeks options to enhance fertility, while Scott explores options to do ... the opposite. We break it all down in THG's official +/- recap!

Kourtney, Scott

Kourtney confesses that she'd like to have even more kids with Scott. Or without him. He does make cute ones, but hey, why limit your options! Plus 20.

Scott confides to friends that he doesn’t want more kids at his age and may need to get a vasectomy. Definitely the first option for handling this. Minus 10.

His friends say just to talk to Kourt, she can be reasonable. LOL. Minus 15. This is a girl who says she no longer believes in the pill. Like at all.

The doctor tells him it’s a permanent solution and to be prepared. Rob tells him he’s too young to do it. Scott doesn't do it. Storyline concludes. Minus 30.

Khloe, meanwhile, works up the strength to see a fertility specialist, and it turns she may have problems ovulating. Poor girl, that just breaks your heart.

"I can't believe I'm sitting here, going through porn magazines so I can find the perfect pair of knockers." - Kris. Minus 150 and that seems generous.

Kylie and Kendall Jenner have a habit of borrowing things from Kris' closet. And by borrowing we mean taking, keeping and not saying anything. Plus 10.

Mom tells them there will be a sign in/sign sign out system with VIDEO from now on ... somehow that seems believable in the Jenner household. Plus 5.

Of course, that has its benefits when your mom is certifiably insane.

Kris Jenner Cleavage

"I'm definitely starting to think that my mom should get more surgery, because now she's telling us that we can have anything in her closet." - Kylie. Plus 20.

Kris invites the family over to see her new breasts. Khloe and Scott are disgusted she would do this, since she still has stitches. Ditto THG. Minus 210.

"I'm 31, and I'll be 32 this year, and as young as I feel, I still have those feelings where I can't wait for the day when I have my own kids. It'll be so exciting when that happens." - Kim Kardashian. Please no. Minus 40.

Kim and Khloe have ultrasounds and blood work at the fertility clinic and the doctor tells Kim if she wants to freeze her eggs she can. No word on whether there are any options to freeze Kim in general. Plus 20.

"I'm not the baby, I'm a big boy now." - Mason. Yes, that would be Scott. Plus 30.

EPISODE TOTAL: -350. SEASON TOTAL: -800.

Health I. T (HIT) Strategic Planning | michael kors

Posted on | September 9, 2012 | Comments Off

Early adaptors of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) approach are finding that they?ve to organize for an of change, which will impact the whole organization, long before they generate an IT specialist. The Information Technology (HIT) component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed into law on February 17, 2009. A certain target of Medicare and Medicaid HIT conditions would be to offer incentives for the use of certified Electronic Health Records (EHR ).Over a year period health care services can be reimbursed a total of $44,000 when they show important use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology. Eventually, by year 2015, you will see fines for doctors that not follow EHR.To increase HIT payments, providers must begin to submit for bonus payments through the 2011 and 2012 calendar year. This really is great news for agencies that have been considering an ERH process, because they could benefit from these lessons learned from the others that have jumped in and executed the process through test and error.Consistent with any important change management process, it?s essential that the authority be aware of the disruptive effect the EHR process can have during the organization. The strategic planning processes offers a for developing specific strategies, switching those strategies into a business planning process and build measurable and achievable organizational objectives. It is a procedure that not just determines where a business wants and has to move, but in addition, how it?s planning to get thereHIT Strategic Planning:Health Information Technology (HIT) payments are disseminate over a 5 year period. That is the time for you to seize the opportunity to create a strategic approach with short and long term goals that coincide with the HIT planning process and the agencies mission. At the start of the process, creating and communicating a compelling vision may be the strong directional power. The vision sets the strategy for another 5 to ten years and opportunities the near future success of the business, its migration to EHR technology and the resulting improved patient information and care.An effective planning process needs to include an additional analysis and an inner evaluation. The external assessment views the corporations consumer or market segments, along with an aggressive and trend analysis. A formalized internal appraisal must fairly review functions & the businesses framework, sources, benefits and limitations. A survey evaluation device from the third-party, maybe not affiliated with the organization, will create neutral resultsCollaboration: It is necessary that the HIT staff really represent the agencies medical leadership, in addition to administrative and IT leadership teams. Consider doing a comprehensive work flow analysis to examine the current efficiency of the business ahead of IT interventionIt has been early adaptors experience that organizations are never fully prepared for the reduction in production that characterizes the EHR planning and implementation process, before EHR implementation starts. Allow sufficient time for the EHR team to accomplish the collection, planning and implementation process (24 to 36 months is preferred ).Communication: A clear and upfront conversation of the organizations perspective, and how HIT may match the vision, must be established by the management team before beginning the EHR process.Update policies and procedures to inform staff, with clear and concise documentation, on how functions, tasks and operations may have been changed.Implement a standard orientation process to insure consistency.Cross-fertilization of office staff within orientation, training & development times has been a beneficial method in learning the big picture. Management support for a world of confidence and open conversation was found to promote honest feedback on the machine and the EHR implementation procedure, which points to the increased buy-in that is essential for successful HIT initiatives. It is inevitable that EHR will quickly exchange an organizational culture that might be started on yesterdays paradigms and suggestions. Among the lessons learned by early adapters of electronic health technology is control groups who produce a method that includes venture, interaction and cooperation before beginning the process create a breeding ground in which people are ready and stoked up about operationalizing the vision.Aligning resources and creating guidelines for effectively leading people across the firm, before beginning the EHR selection process, may fundamentally lead to an increased degree of performance.Medical experts may take full benefit of the ARRA HIT schedule and the maximum payment routine by beginning the EHR development process in 2011 or 2012 and submitting for reimbursement. Now?s the full time to develop a strategy which determines the future path of the business and what organizational resources will soon be had a need to determine that achievement.

Bankruptcy Tips Advice: Liquidation and Bankruptcy Tips

If you have found yourself in financial trouble and are considering bankruptcy there are a few important things to remember that will help you to get through it. Don't panic and stay cool, because the same thing is going on up and down streets all over the U.S. and Canada with the decline of the economy.

Cut your personal expenses as far down as possible and don't start drowning your sorrows in dope or alcohol. If you have a romantic partner talk to them and if they aren't willing to accept the realities that prevail and go with your financial recovery program then you are going to have to spend a little time being single, because they are going to leave you any way when things get real tight.

Remember that as soon as you're financial affairs are in order and you are solvent finding another attractive bed partner will be a cinch. You may have to get a temporary job that is below your skill or educational qualifications and the quicker you accept this and do it the sooner you will back crapping in tall cotton. People such as your in laws will try to run you down and make you feel like a failure but don't let it get to you and remember that as soon as the economy comes back up, so will your bank account.

Besides all these people that talk behind your back are the very same boot lickers that will be sucking up to you when your ship pulls into port. Get professional advice and there is plenty available online for free and many times your creditors will have sources for information that they can refer you to. Keep your chin up and remember that every fighter gets knocked down a time or two; you just have to remember to roll with the punches and keep on swinging.

Netanyahu urges international 'red lines' to stop Iran

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged world powers on Sunday to set a "clear red line" for Tehran's atomic activities and said they had failed to convince it of their resolve to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear arms.

Netanyahu's remarks suggested a growing Israeli impatience with its main ally, the United States, and other countries that have been pressing him to give diplomacy and sanctions more time to work and hold off on any go-it-alone Israeli strike on Iran.

"I believe the truth must be stated: The international community is not placing a clear red line for Iran and Iran does not see international resolve to stop its nuclear programme," Netanyahu told his cabinet.

"Unless Iran sees this clear red line and this clear resolve it will not stop moving forward with its nuclear programme, and Iran must not have nuclear weapons," he said in broadcast remarks.

Although Netanyahu did not single out the United States or U.S. President Barack Obama in his criticism, Israeli officials have said they hope for stronger language from the president about possible U.S. military action.

Obama, who has had a frosty relationship with Netanyahu, has insisted he will not allow Iran to build atomic weapons and that all options are on the table.

On Saturday Tzachi Hanegbi, an influential former Israeli legislator and a Netanyahu confidant, said "the rhetoric of the U.S. president is too vague, very amorphous" and Iran was not taking Obama's words seriously.

In a U.S. election year, Republican candidate Mitt Romney has also sharply criticized Obama's handling of Iran as not being tough enough.

Tehran says it is refining uranium to fuel a planned network of nuclear power plants so that it can export more of its oil and gas. The United States and its allies accuse Iran of a covert bid to develop the capability to make nuclear bombs.

Israel, believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, views a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence.

U.N. ADDRESS

Netanyahu has said he will speak out about the dangers of Iran in an address this month to the U.N. General Assembly in New York. He is also expected to hold talks with Obama during his visit, but no announcement has yet been made.

A senior Israeli official told Reuters last week Netanyahu would seek a firm pledge of U.S. military action if Iran did not back down on uranium enrichment. Such a promise could dissuade Israel from attacking Iran alone, Israeli officials have said.

A United Nations report said on Thursday that Iran had more than doubled the number of centrifuges in its fortified bunker at Fordow since May, showing it was still expanding its nuclear programme despite Western pressure and threat of Israeli attack. The new machines are not yet operating, the report said.

"The report confirms what I have been saying for a long time, international sanctions are a burden on Iran's economy but they are not in any way delaying the advancement of Iran's nuclear programme," Netanyahu told his cabinet, in public remarks opening the meeting.

"The Iranians are using the talks with the world powers to win time and to advance their nuclear programme," he said.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, has suggested Washington would not be drawn into conflict with Iran should Israel attack. "I don't want to be complicit if they (Israel) choose to do it," Britain's Guardian newspaper quoted him on Friday as saying.

Recent heightened Israeli rhetoric has stoked speculation that Israel might attack Iran before the U.S. elections in November, believing that Obama would give it military help and not risk alienating pro-Israeli voters.

Israeli officials have said Israel has yet to decide, amid divisions within its security cabinet and warnings by military and security chiefs that a strike would have only a limited effect in setting back Iran's nuclear programme.

An Iranian general said that if Israel were to attack Iran, Israeli officials would be the target of retaliation, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

"In case of Israel's military attack against Iran, the officials of (Israel) will be among the first victims of such an attack," Mohammad Ali Assoudi, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, told Iran's English-language Press TV.

His broadcast remarks gave no details, but Press TV paraphrased him as saying Israel's policies had induced hatred of its officials among residents of the occupied territories.

Iran has undertaken large-scale military maneuvers this summer and unveiled upgrades to weapons it says are defensive, including what it said was a more accurate short-range missile.

Russian bus station collapse 'kills one'

The ceiling of a bus station in Russia's central coal producing region of Kemerovo collapsed on Sunday during repair work, killing at least one person and injuring 13, the Interfax news agency said.

The station in the mining town of Belovo was operating when the repairs on its roof were being carried out, Interfax quoted a local emergencies ministry official as saying.

Earlier reports said the incident happened at a train station.

Vesti 24 state television said eight people had been hospitalised in various conditions, adding that the area affected by the collapse was more than 200 square metres (over 2,100 square feet).

Another five people with light injuries were treated on the spot, news reports said.

The struggling Kemerovo region sits at the southern tip of the Ural Mountains industrial district and is dotted with Soviet-era and largely unprofitable mines that make up the Kuzbass Basin.

Belovo is a town of 75,000 people lying 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of the capital city of Kemerovo in the heart of the region's coal district.

The town mines nearly a tenth of the entire region's coal and also extracts metals, employing most of its adult population in the pits.

Accidents to Russia's outdated infrastructure are frequent and happen most often in areas where local authorities lack the funds to update equipment or conduct the necessary repairs.

Interfax said federal agents from the powerful Investigative Committee had arrived at the scene to probe possible official negligence.

South Africa justice minister demands explanation of decision to charge miners with murder

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's justice minister Friday challenged the top prosecutor's decision to charge 270 miners with the murders and attempted murders of 112 striking co-workers shot by the police, a development that indicates more divisions in the government over the killings that shocked the nation.

The National Prosecuting Authority's decision to charge the arrested miners under an apartheid-era law leaves the government open to accusations that it is acting like the former brutal white rulers. It appeared to be an attempt to shift the blame for the shootings from the police to the miners.

The Aug. 16 shootings by police that killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 near the Lonmin platinum mine were the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said the prosecutor's decision to charge the miners "has induced a sense of shock, panic and confusion," leading him to demand an explanation. "It is therefore incumbent upon me to seek clarity on the basis upon which such a decision is taken," he said in a statement.

The National Prosecuting Authority has no immediate response to the statement from Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said.

Rabble-rousing politician Julius Malema meanwhile declared he will make the country's mines ungovernable and took his first battle to a mine owned partly by President Jacob Zuma's nephew, Khulubuse Zuma, and Zondwa Mandela, a grandson of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.

"Our leaders have lost their way and have been co-opted by mine owners and fed profits. They don't care about you," Malema told cheering miners on Thursday. Malema was expelled from the governing African National Congress party in April and is pursuing a vendetta to get Zuma ousted.

"We are going to lead a mining revolution in this country. We will run these mines ungovernable until the boers (whites) come to the table," he told workers at Aurora gold mine in Grootvlei, east of Johannesburg.

The politically connected Aurora Empowerment Systems took over two working gold mines in 2009 from a company that went into liquidation. Since then, workers have not been paid and the mines have been stripped of their assets. About 5,000 people lost their jobs. The company has ignored a court order to pay its workers 4.3 million rand ($537,500) and refuses to comment on the affair.

Malema's threats come at a time when tempers are running high, with many demanding that everyone involved be held accountable, including the government, the unions and companies that some accuse of supporting breakaway unions to feed disunity among workers.

The powerful Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomed Radebe's move, saying it was "absolutely outraged" at the prosecutor's decision and that he should have waited for the findings of a judicial commission of inquiry tasked with uncovering the truth.

Like many among the leadership of the African National Congress, Radebe has his own ties to mines. His wife, Bridgette Radebe, and her brother, Patrice Motsepe, have become billionaires through their ownership of mines under a post-apartheid dispensation to share the country's wealth, including its vast mineral resources.

But only a small black elite has benefited, often through corruption, with the majority of South Africa's 48 million people becoming more mired in poverty and the gap between rich and poor widening.

Half of all workers in South Africa earn less than R3,000 ($375) a month with many supporting as many as eight people because of rampant unemployment, according to Department of Labor figures.

In an interview with the local Mail and Guardian newspaper, Zwelinzima Vavi, secretary general of the powerful Congress of South African Trade Unions, said the violence at the Lonmin mine did not catch them off guard.

"We have been warning about a ticking time bomb for years, saying that if we don't address the current levels of unemployment, poverty and inequalities at some point, the poor and those who are feeling the pinch will march to our own boardrooms to demand that we do something about their circumstances," he said.

This month's violence at the London-registered Lonmin PLC platinum mine was rooted in rivalry between an upstart union and the National Union of Mineworkers, the largest in the country led by leaders who support Zuma's bid for re-election as president of the ANC at a December congress. Miners accuse the NUM of being more concerned about politics and business than the shop-floor needs of miners who complain they do not earn enough to feed their families and send their children to school.

Lonmin has lost millions in share value since the illegal strike for higher wages began Aug. 10. It has said it probably will not be able to meet debt obligations due in a month.

Lonmin said only 5.7 percent of its work force reported Friday. It said there has been intimidation of workers and that most are probably awaiting the results of a peace accord being negotiated with the Department of Labor and trade unions.

The funerals of many of those killed are to take place this weekend.

>>> a side effect of isaac being felt all across this country right now, gas prices are the highest they've ever been on this date. nationwide the average is now $3.82 up seven cents in just the last two days as isaac has disrupted both oil drilling and the output of refineries. experts expected some of that will reverse soon but not before what's going to be a more expensive labor day weekend for a lot of folks on the road.

Data Stories: Annicka Campbell on the Digital Love Project

August 31st, 2012

While I was perusing social data proposals for SXSW panels, I came across the Digital Love Project submission. ?The Digital Love Project is a study of the full life cycle of romantic partnerships through ethnographic analysis of digital-social picture and video sharing. Through review of thousands of visual-social data points ? from first glance to ultimately tying the knot ? we observe trends about romantic partnerships that change the way we think about driving relevance.? I thought this would make a great Data Story, so I reached out to one of the researchers, Annicka Campbell of SapientNitro, for an interview.?

1.??What was the genesis of deciding to do the Digital Love Project?

My co-author Melissa Read and I both have backgrounds in the social sciences ? I was trained as an anthropologist, and Melissa has a PhD in marketing psychology. ?We?re both fascinated by the behavioral implications of social media, and so a few months ago we decided to embark on an ethnographic analysis of romantic partnerships as expressed through social. Our theory was that our findings would illuminate new ways for marketers to build more meaningful relationships and experiences for consumers online. It?s been a pretty fun (and often funny) experience, and we?re hoping that this combination of marketing insight and humor could translate really well for SXSW Interactive attendees.

Annicka Campbell of the Digital Love Project

Annicka Campbell of the Digital Love Project

2.??How has displaying relationships on social media changed how people behave??

Great question. Since the term ?relationship? is so broad, we?ve focused on analyzing users in serious romantic relationships. We found that the relationship sharing process has become somewhat standardized; we identified a set of relationship milestones that couples are almost?expected?to share in social. This could mean posting joint vlogs or ?selfies,? crowdsourcing engagement proposals, or having wedding attendees post with a customized hashtag. Call them rules of engagement, perhaps. We actually think that these behaviors are making romantic relationships more interactive and collaborative than ever before. Of course, there can be negative implications of this behavior, as well.

3. ?What social media publishers get the most love from those in love? What channels are people using to display their love?

This is such a great question. What we?ve found is that it often hinges on age ? age of those in-love, and the age of the relationship. For teenagers, tools like Tumblr and Facebook provide a very public space to flirt and date in the passive presence of their friends, which I think is really important at that age. What was surprising to me is that this is also true for older people.

Right now, we?re also really focusing on the role of geo-location in romantic relationships in our analysis. A few years ago I met an ex-boyfriend through Twitter?s ?Nearby Tweets? feature. It was really convenient, initially, because he lived across the street from me!??Of course, when we broke up, I cursed that darned geolocation API.

Melissa Read of the Digital Love Project

Melissa Read (Ph.D) of the Digital Love Project

4.??By studying Facebook relationship changes, researchers were able to find out that breakups spiked highest around the holidays. What are some of the interesting takeaways you?ve learned about relationships by studying them online?

I loved the findings of David McCandless and Lee Byron?s project ? and of course, how beautifully those findings were visualized.? Some of what we?ve found is similar, particularly during wedding season, back-to-school season, and spring break.

We also found that social media is being used a feedback tool for people in relationships. This might mean instagramming a photo of a dinner cooked together as a way to express appreciation to them. Conversely, this could also mean using Facebook to give negative feedback to your significant other. I?m fascinated by the way some couples use social media tools like Tumblr as sort of a ?relationship backchannel? where they document and discuss the life they share together, with both their online and offlline friends. I think that our long national obsession with oversharing and social media narcissism is passing, and people are starting to understand that social media can be used as a tool to build and grow meaningful relationships, and perhaps even contribute something of value to our culture. Just look at Facebook introducing a same-sex marriage status option a few months ago.

5. What do you want people to take away from what you learned, especially marketers? How do marketers reach in-love couples besides targeting wedding ads at the newly engaged?

We?ve found that there are very tactical takeaways for marketers as it relates to engaged couples. As the economy continues to improve, we?ve seen that the wedding industry has really rebounded, as well ? we spend $74 billion dollars per year on weddings, and that fact alone has obvious implications for marketers within that industry. We?re seeing event marketers using Pinterest to drive sales, planners using tools like Evernote to make the planning process more collaborative, and photographers incorporating Instagram into their toolkit.

Again, the tactical implications for that industry are interesting, but we?re trying to think even bigger. The idea that social media are being used as to establish, build and optimize romantic relationships in new and innovative ways ? well, switch out ?romantic relationships? with ?consumer-brand relationships? and we have the beginning of a really interesting discussion that (we hope) this year?s SXSW attendees will be interested in.

Today is the last day for SXSW panel voting, so if this is a topic that interests you, be sure to get your vote in for the Digital Love Project.?

Total voluntary support for Indiana University in fiscal 2012 is second highest on record

Last modified: Wednesday, August 29, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 29, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University received $347.9 million in support from the private sector in fiscal year 2012, the second highest total in the history of the university. The annual total voluntary support figure, which reports actual dollars received, includes $154 million in gifts for IU through the IU Foundation, $17.4 million in private gifts for the Riley Children's Foundation and $176.5 million in nongovernmental grants awarded to the university.

"We deeply appreciate the steadfast commitment of the donors and grant makers who have clearly demonstrated their confidence in Indiana University through their generosity," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "They recognize the power of the university to push the boundaries of knowledge, to enrich the lives of our citizens and to contribute to economic revitalization, and their support makes it possible for the university to realize its potential."

Total voluntary support is up 18 percent from fiscal 2011. Nongovernmental grants to faculty and programs increased by 33 percent over fiscal 2011 and set a new record.

"It is also a tribute to faculty excellence and innovation to have grants from the private sector awarded to faculty and programs reach the highest level on record," McRobbie continued. "Record support in this area is a clear indication of IU's stature as one of the world's leading public research universities."

IU Foundation President Gene Tempel emphasized the overall impact of the good news. "Ultimately, total voluntary support is much more than a number. These gifts and grants represent opportunities for students to succeed, faculty to break new ground and the university as a whole to transform lives across Indiana, the nation and the world," Tempel said. "It is evident that the university has truly loyal donors and friends, and we are grateful for their continued support."

The record for total voluntary support was set in fiscal 2008 when IU received $408.6 million. That year included two extraordinary gifts: an estate gift of $77 million from the late Jesse H. and Beulah C. Cox, and $69 million from the Lilly Endowment.

Indiana University's fiscal 2012 total of $347.9 million is reported to the Council for Aid to Education, which issues an annual report in the first quarter of each calendar year on giving to education and compiles a national ranking of all colleges and universities. Indiana University has appeared in the Council for Aid to Education's Top 20 list in 17 of the past 20 years.
