98% Le Havre

All Critics (56) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (1)

'Tis the season, so the saying goes. And when it comes to Aki Kaurism?ki, it holds true. The Finnish writer-director arrives bearing a gift wrapped in a contemporary immigration fable.

If the bummers and ambiguity of some of this season's movies are getting you down - or, hey, just the bummers and ambiguities of life - make your way to Le Havre. You won't be sorry.

The Finnish director's sense of humor is dry and dark as pitch, as he consistently finds moments of absurdity in the midst of strife and tragedy.

Kaurism?ki wrote the script, I think, with secret credit from Mother Goose and some fabric softener.

"Le Havre" is a small bit of movie magic, a story that plays more as a fable even as it deals with something as topical as immigration.

The film is especially comforting if you love old movies, as Kaurismaki does.

The latest work by Finnish cult director Aki Kaurismaki is is his strongst in a decade--and one of 2011 best foreign pictures.

The movie never wears out its welcome with an efficient 93-minute running time. Besides the four principal characters, the supporting cast makes an impression playing a grocer, a baker, a tavern owner and Marcel's best buddy from Vietnam. It also...

While the film never reaches any hugely profound revelations with its parable-styled stories of compassion and community, and occasionally feels a little slight, it's also enormously enjoyable and gorgeous to watch.

It's a puzzle, and an intriguing one.

In two stories of evolving trust and secrets, Le Havre reflects the essential simplicity of the moral choices made in its simple-seeming camera set-ups.

Kaurismaki's movie about a shoeshine man and an illegal immigrant is nothing less than a joy

A wonderfully concise, unfussy movie; it is "easy" by the director's standards, which is to say that it doesn't leave any significant ellipses in the narrative up until the aggressively darling ending.

...an upbeat little tome that leaves a good feeling to the spirit.

Kaurism?ki can almost restore your hope in humanity.

Kaurismaki dives into French film culture in 'Le Havre'

You almost become a citizen of Le Havre, watching this film and rejoicing at the end as two newfound, unexpected friends share a drink.

It's a straightforward yet completely artificial scenario, with welcome overtones of Italian Neo-Realism.

Unlike the director's typical hero, Wilms's spare performance conveys confidence rather than defeat. He and the kid warm the heart, thawing Kaurism?ki's usual icy aplomb.

Heart-wrenching but ultimately inspirational.

Le Havre is not the filmmaker's best work (see La Vie de Boh?me for that), but no matter the storm, we should be grateful to dock in this port.

Ex-Tar Heels return to coach against alma mater

CHAPEL HILL ? A victory today in its final non-conference game of the regular season will set a record for North Carolina?s longest winning streak at the Smith Center.

In order to secure their 26th consecutive home victory ? which shouldn?t prove overly problematic ? the Tar Heels must defeat a Monmouth team under the guidance of several men who are intimately familiar with finding success in the almost 26-year-old arena affectionately known as the ?Dean Dome.?

Monmouth is coached by former North Carolina point guard King Rice, who?s in his first year at the West Long Branch, N.J., school.

Two of Rice?s assistant coaches are Tar Heels from the same era ? Derrick Phelps, also a former point guard, and Brian Reese, an athletic forward during his playing career.

Phelps and Reese were starters on North Carolina?s 1993 NCAA championship team. And thus, their handiwork helped establish the current ceiling of 25 victories in a row at the Smith Center, a streak that ran from 1992-1994.

It?s a situation that has had North Carolina coach Roy Williams waxing nostalgic about the dominance his Kansas teams enjoyed at historic Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks won 62 games in a row during one stretch of his 15 seasons there.

?That?s a big home-court advantage,? Williams said. ?That?s what I want the Smith Center to be. I want people to feel like when they come in here it?s extremely hard to win.?

Even Rice, who remains memorable for the high-top fade haircut he wore and polarizing figure he cast as North Carolina player from 1987-1991.

Williams? final season as an assistant to Dean Smith was Rice?s first with the Tar Heels.

Williams was responsible for recruiting Rice out of Binghamton, N.Y., and still sends Rice?s mother a Christmas card every year.

?

North Carolina has won 55 straight home games against non-league competition. The last non-Atlantic Coast Conference opponent to capture a victory in Chapel Hill was Illinois in November 2005.

The Tar Heels went 15-0 at the Smith Center last season and are 9-0 there this season. Their last home loss came against Florida State on Feb. 24, 2010.

North Carolina is coming off a 100-62 beating of Elon University on Thursday night.

After today, the Tar Heels? next two months will be consumed by 16 ACC games.

?Obviously we can get better,? senior Tyler Zeller said. ?But I think we?re getting better. We?re being a lot more unselfish. And if we continue to do that we can be a very good team.?

Elpida starts shipments of next-gen Wide IO Mobile RAM

Tablets might be all sexy curves and Gorilla Glass, but it's what's on the inside that counts, right? Efficient DRAM mightn't set your heart alight, but Elpida Memory did just start shipping its next generation 30nm "Wide IO Mobile RAM." The firm claims it uses 50 percent less power compared with equivalent DDR2 sticks, letting you caress your beloved device for longer. This economy is thanks to it purring along at just 200MHz, which is even more impressive when you consider it brags a 12.8 GB/s data rate per chip. This pumped, yet frugal, performance comes courtesy of using x512-bit data width -- some ten times larger than that of existing DRAMs. The party doesn't stop there, with the Elpida also debuting its LPDDR3 chip, brushing aside LPDDR2 with twice the data rates at 6.4GB/s a slice, and a 25 percent smaller power-drain in tow. Mass production should commence in 2012, check the source link for the full break-down.

Chesapeake Energy: Managing Its Way Into Analysts' Good Graces

Chesapeake Energy?s (CHK) recent deal to sell its Appalachian Midstream Services, LLC, for $865 million to its spin off, Chesapeake Midstream Partners, LP (CHKM), may seem like hand waving to some. However, it is not.

Via this deal CHK has transferred debt obligations to an independent subsidiary, and it has gained a greater interest in the subsidiary. The publicly owned subsidiary has then taken on this debt load. This all means that CHK cannot be held liable for it. Plus the near monopoly pipeline business, CHKM, can borrow the money to finance this debt on good terms because it has a steady and defined income stream from its pipeline operations. Banks don?t like the big morass that is CHK any more than the analysts. It is too hard for them to determine what might fail and what effects any failure(s) might have on the overall company. With this action CHK has seemingly become more complex, but in actuality has become less complex to the bankers. This is a good thing. It should help CHK?s debt rating.

In another recent JV deal, CHK sold a 25% interest in 570,000 acres of CHK?s Utica Shale holdings to an undisclosed partner for $2.1B. $500M is scheduled to be paid by year-end 2011, and the remaining amount will be paid as development expenses in the Utica by 2014. This amounted to selling 142,500 net acres of its Utica lease holdings for a price near $15,000 per acre. This is nearly $12,500 per acre more than CHK paid for those acres ($2500/acre). This new money will allow CHK to fund some of its Utica development expenses. Plus it will pay off some of the debt incurred in buying the Utica lease holdings. It means CHK effectively bought roughly 700,000 of its Utica acres for free.

At the same time CHK formed a subsidiary for another part of its Utica Shale holdings. It sold $1.25B in perpetual preferred shares in this subsidiary, CHK Utica LLC, to EIG Global Energy Partners, GSO Capital Partners LP, and Magnetar Capital. This subsidiary owns approximately 700,000 net acres in the Utica. With this action CHK acquired $1.25B in immediate cash. Plus it sold no common shares in CHK Utica LLC, so it has retained complete control. In other words, CHK still owns those 700,00 acres. It has acquired the burden of the dividend payments for the preferred shares, but that is a lesser burden than its former debt. If CHK Utica LLC (CHKU) becomes cash strapped, it does not have to make dividend payments on time, although those payments will accumulate. The possibility of default is lessened considerably.

Effectively, CHK has moved development costs and debt burden into CHKU. This again decreases the liability of the parent company, but it does not really decrease its potential gains. Plus it again makes CHKU more understandable as a ?more simple entity? to banks. It makes CHKU more able to obtain favorable bank loans. Perpetual preferred shares have no maturity date, and they can be called at any time by the issuer (CHKU).

Analysts are going to soon realize that far from complicating the financial structure of CHK, this action (and others like it) simplify CHK?s financial structure to a banker. Plus they help to increase the book value of CHK?s assets, which again makes CHK a better overall credit risk. Since few now doubt the commercial viability of CHK?s Utica Shale holdings, this is even more true.

Some of the other ?monetization? actions CHK has taken just in the last year are:

  1. It closed a JV with CNOOC (CEO) in the DJ and Powder River Basins for approximately $1.3B of cash and drilling carries in February 2011.
  2. It closed the sale of Fayetteville Shale assets for net proceeds of approximately $4.65B in cash to a subsidiary of BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) in March 2011.
  3. It repurchased approximately $2B in senior notes and contingent convertible senior notes YTD.
  4. It closed VPP 9 proceeds of approximately $850M for approximately 180 bcfe of proved reserves for approximately $4.82/mcfe in May 2011.
  5. It helped develop a recapitalization plan for Frac Tech Services LLC. It received a cash distribution of approximately $200M, and it now owns 30% of Frac Tech?s common stock, which has a $100 cost basis.
  6. It is working on more monetizations.
  7. Its growth projections were so strong in the first six months of the ?25/25 Plan" it amended the plan to a ?30/25 Plan? (30% production growth per year and 25% reduction of long term debt per year).

Along with the $2.1B and $1.25B deals described in detail above, these actions amount to a total of more than $10B. This is more than half of CHK?s market cap of $14.54B. It is approximately one third of its $27.22B Enterprise Value. This is huge, and it shows CHK?s true value. CHK lost very little overall in these deals, but it gained huge amounts of cash. CHK still has 15.1 million net acres in excellent oil and gas fields. 6.1 million net acres of these are in prime oil shale fields.

Huge amounts of CHK?s assets are extremely undervalued, as the above deals show. The sale of the Utica assets (acquired for $2,500/acre) for approximately $15,000 per acre is an example of just how undervalued many of these assets are on the books. CHK has prepared a NAV table analysis (see below), which attempts to estimate the true value of CHK?s assets. However, even this table far undervalues the assets. It does not come close to putting a ?real? value on CHK?s oil shale assets, and it only touches on the possible natural gas assets' ?real? value.

More and more world long term energy forecasts are predicting huge increases in natural gas use. This means huge increases in natural gas prices. A lot are predicting these increases will begin in 2012 as the U.S. finally begins to recognize the potential price gains from exporting LNG. There is also the possibility of a U.S. energy policy change that will emphasize natural gas use for transportation.

CHK sells at a PE of 11.4 and an FPE of 9.49. It pays a non-negligible dividend of 1.50%. There is a lot to like in this stock. I will try to follow up with a second article about its production progress. However, any serious investor should be looking at this stock for a long-term investment. If it has another $5B-$10B debt monetization year in 2012, that may really put it on analysts' radar. You will want to be in this stock at that time.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in CHK over the next 72 hours.

Top 10 Health & Happiness Lessons of 2011 (LiveScience.com)

A lengthy job search promotes worry, stress and anger, but a bad job is worse for happiness than no job at all.

Those findings are on the Gallup polling agency's list of most compelling findings about health and happiness in 2011. The agency queries tens of thousands of Americans every year about their health, well-being and happiness. The resulting Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index is a day-by-day measurement of America's mental state. Here's what Gallup's editors say intrigued them the most this year:

1. Long job searches are bad for well-being

The longer Americans search for jobs, the unhappier they are with their lives, according to a Gallup poll analysis released in February. Only 34 percent of unemployed Americans who had been looking for work for at least 11 weeks said they were "thriving" in life, compared with 47 percent of those who had been looking for 10 weeks or less. Sending out more job applications with no luck had a similar effect: Half of people who had sent out fewer than 10 applications said they were thriving, compared with 32 percent of those who had sent out more.

2. More Americans now normal-weight than overweight

For the first time in three years, more Americans qualified as "normal weight" than "overweight," according to poll data released in October. That poll found 36.6 percent of Americans had a body mass index (BMI) placing them in the "normal" category, compared with 35.8 percent who were classified as overweight.

Still, 25.8 percent of Americans qualified for the more severe condition of being obese, defined by a BMI of 30 or higher. BMI is calculated using weight and height. That meant the majority of Americans ? 61.6 ?percent ?? are still in weight ranges that put them at higher risk for health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. [8 Reasons Our Waistlines Are Expanding]

3. Fewer young adults go without health insurance

A growing number of young Americans had health coverage in 2011, thanks to a provision in the Affordable Care Act that allows children to stay on their parents' health plans until age 26. Since that rule went into effect in 2010, Gallup found, the number of uninsured 18- to 25-year-olds without insurance dropped by 3.8 percentage points, to 24.2 percent.

However, the proportion of 26- to 64-year-olds without insurance increased over the same time period, from 18.1 percent to 19.9 percent. Overall, the survey found, 17.4 percent of Americans lacked health insurance in the second quarter of 2011.

4. Colorado is America's skinniest state

An August Gallup report revealed that Colorado, with an obesity rate of 20.1 percent, remains the skinniest of the states. West Virginia had the heftiest population, with 34.3 percent of its people obese. That's the highest rate Gallup has measured since it began obesity tracking in 2008.

Although Colorado is relatively svelte today, its current population would be the fattest in America if the state were to travel back in time 20 years. In 1991, not a single state reported an obesity rate of more than 20 percent.?

5. Americans struggle to afford food

Obesity rates aside, Americans actually had a harder time affording food and other basic necessities in 2011 than in recent years. When asked if they always had enough money to buy food in the last year, 79.8 percent of Americans said yes, the lowest number since November 2008. At that time, the start of the economic crisis, 79.4 percent of Americans said they never struggled to afford groceries. [12 Tips for Healthy Eating on a Budget]

The reasons for these patterns is not entirely clear, Gallup reported in November.

6. "Suffering" holds steady

Four percent of Americans said in September that their lives were so bad that they were "suffering," a number that has held steady for 2? years. That's one of the lowest rates in the world, Gallup reported in October. Perhaps unsurprisingly, income and suffering were correlated, with people making less than $24,000 a year about six times more likely to describe themselves as suffering as those with incomes over $90,000 a year.

7. Employers are offering less health coverage

Employer-based health insurance is on the decline in America, with only 44.5 percent of Americans getting health coverage through work in the third quarter of 2011. That percentage has been on a steady decline since Gallup began tracking health insurance numbers in 2008, when the rate was 49.8 percent. There has been a simultaneous increase in the number of Americans getting their health insurance from the government (up to 25.1 percent from 22.9 percent) as well as an increase in people without any insurance at all (up to 17.3 percent from 14.6 percent).

8. Americans caring for each other

While working a day job, one in six Americans also acts as a caregiver for an elderly or disabled family member, Gallup reported in July. The caregiver job was most prevalent in the 45- to 64-year-old age demographic, with 22 percent of people in that group reporting caregiving responsibilities. Women were more likely to be caregivers for a needy relative than men were, 20 percent to 16 percent.

9. Bad health costs $153 billion a year

Weight-related health issues and other chronic problems cause American workers to miss an estimated 450 million days of work more each year than normally healthy workers, Gallup reported in October. That absenteeism costs more than $153 billion in lost productivity annually.

Normal-weight workers without chronic health conditions experience about 4 days a year when health interferes with their normal activities. Workers who are overweight and obese with one or two chronic conditions average 13 "unhealthy" days a year, while overweight or obese workers with three or more chronic conditions report 42 unhealthy days annually.

Workers do not take all of these "unhealthy" days as sick days, but Gallup researchers calculated that workers miss about one day of work for every three unhealthy days they experience.

10. A bad job is worse than no job

Workers who are emotionally disengaged from their jobs view their lives more negatively than workers who have no job at all, Gallup reported in March. Forty-two percent of the people who said they felt disconnected from their work and workplaces described themselves as "thriving" in life, compared with 48 percent of the unemployed. Workers who were happily engaged and enthusiastic with work were happiest in life. Of that group, 71 percent said they were thriving.?
