In this article, Chambers and colleagues hypothesized that, contrary to what some research might indicate, prejudice is not restricted to a particular political ideology.

Rather, the conflicting values of liberals and conservatives give rise to different kinds of prejudice, with each group favoring other social groups that share their values. In the first study, three diverse groups of participants rated the ideological position and their overall impression of 34 different target groups.

Participants' impressions fell in line with their ideology. For example, conservatives expressed more prejudice than liberals against groups that were identified as liberal (e.g., African-Americans, homosexuals), but less prejudice against groups identified as conservative (e.g., Christian fundamentalists, business people).

In the second and third studies, participants were presented with 6 divisive political issues and descriptions of racially diverse target persons for each issue. Neither liberals' nor conservatives' impressions of the target persons were affected by the race of the target, but both were strongly influenced by the target's political attitudes.

From these findings the researchers conclude that prejudices commonly linked with ideology are most likely derived from perceived ideological differences and not from other characteristics like racial tolerance or intolerance.

UK looking to remake its residence hall system

University of Kentucky officials on Monday promoted the economic spinoff from their plan to remake the residence hall system in partnership with a private company, saying construction would create thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenues.

Using nearby work on the first new residence hall as a backdrop, UK leaders sought to keep up the momentum for their long-term proposal to tear down aging dorms and build new living and learning quarters in their place on the Lexington campus.

UK has formed a partnership with a private development firm to replace its dorms. It comes amid efforts to boost enrollment, strengthen undergraduate programs and revitalize the core of the campus.

"We proceeded with this endeavor, not simply to build new buildings that rise over the campus for the next 100 years," UK President Eli Capilouto said. "We did this because of what will happen within these facilities, providing this robust undergraduate education, one that prepares our students for lives of leadership, meaning and purpose."

The first of the new residence halls is set to open in August 2013. The $25.8 million, 601-bed hall in the heart of campus will house Honors students and also will feature classrooms and faculty offices.

In October, UK trustees will consider another phase of the project that would result in four additional residence complexes being built.

Combined, construction of the five residence halls would create nearly 2,900 jobs and generate nearly $4 million in state and local taxes.

"UK is not only creating jobs for the future in the education of our students, we're also creating jobs today," Capilouto said.

The long-term plan is for a new residence hall system featuring up to 9,000 beds on campus. UK currently has about 6,000 residence hall beds, but fewer than 700 of the beds are in rooms with such modern amenities as quick Internet connection. Many aging dorms lack energy efficiencies and lack inviting community spaces where students can study and socialize.

UK Student Government President Stephen Bilas said waiting lists are long for those rooms with such modern features.

"Students want to live on campus and they want affordable, modern residence halls," he said.

UK's private-sector partner in the enterprise is Memphis, Tenn.-based EdR, one of the country's largest developers of collegiate housing.

EdR plans to pump in about $500 million of private equity to cover the costs of the construction project. The company would construct and own the residence halls on land leased by UK.

Each phase of the project must be approved by UK trustees.

Meanwhile, the budget approved by the school's trustees in June started setting side funding for debt service for other long-term campus renovations and construction projects that would include classrooms.

The plans come amid UK's goal to increase first-year enrollment from 4,139 last academic year to 4,800 in the 2013-2014 school year.

Capilouto said the campus revitalization would strengthen UK's recruitment of top students. He said students living on campus have higher success rates than students living off campus.

"Living on campus ... helps inspire the mind, builds friendships and fuels creativity," he said.

Standard Chartered weighs settling Iran laundering probe

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - British bank Standard Chartered is rushing to reach a settlement within days over charges it hid transactions tied to Iran and is set to resume talks with U.S. regulators on Monday, sources familiar with the situation said.

The London-based bank's U.S. legal team have got as far as discussing an amount with regulators, indicating progress has been made before a Wednesday deadline, the sources told Reuters.

Standard Chartered could be forced to pay a fine of up to $1 billion to settle the charges, analysts said last week, although there has been speculation that this figure could be higher to assuage the New York banking regulator pressing the case

New York's Department of Financial Services alleged last week that Standard Chartered hid transactions tied to Iran and the regulator's head, Benjamin Lawsky, ordered the bank to explain why it should not lose its license at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

"It looks like, rather than fight this in the courts, they're looking to resolve this, hopefully ahead of Wednesday," said Investec analyst Vivek Raja.

The bank is awaiting information on whether executives will be required to attend and Chief Executive Peter Sands remains in Britain, a source close to the situation said.

Shares in Standard Chartered were up 1.5 percent to 1,346.5 pence at 1045 GMT, the top riser in Britain's FTSE 100 on hopes of an early resolution which would take away the uncertainty of a damaging legal dispute and a higher fine.

Britain's financial regulator said it remained in close contact with the bank and U.S. regulators.

Politicians have also been in close contact over the affair as the loss of its New York banking license would be a devastating blow for Standard Chartered, effectively cutting off direct access to the U.S. bank market.

VEHEMENTLY DISAGREES

Standard Chartered vehemently disagrees with the agency's allegation the bank improperly processed $250 billion tied to Iran, which Lawsky cited in his order issued August 6. The heart of his order, however, alleges the bank violated state laws when it concealed records of transactions from bank examiners.

The talks could still collapse, and the hearing also could be postponed to allow more time for negotiations.

The bank, meanwhile, was already cooperating in a separate probe dating to 2010 that included the U.S. Justice Department and the Manhattan district attorney. That investigation is aimed at determining whether Standard Chartered violated U.S. sanctions laws and talks on a settlement have been taking place separately from the state discussions.

A settlement with New York would end a period of turmoil for the bank and law enforcement officials and likely would result in a multimillion-dollar fine for Standard Chartered. A settlement with federal officials could also result in a multimillion-dollar fine.

Officials for the Justice and Treasury departments and the Manhattan district attorney either weren't available for comment or declined to comment.

Lawsky's order cited communications between Standard Chartered officials about the reputational and legal threats to the bank if it kept doing business with Iranian clients.

Lawsky's department and Standard Chartered declined to comment.

Faced with similar accusations, some banks prefer to settle quietly. Barclays Plc, Credit Suisse Group, Lloyds Banking Group, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and ING Bank NV had agreed in prior years to settlements totaling nearly $2 billion into how those banks allegedly processed money or assets tied to sanctioned countries.

Standard Chartered, by comparison, said last week that Lawsky's "interpretation" that the bank had improperly handled Iranian transactions was "incorrect as a matter of law".

Lawsky's office alleged the bank had hidden from regulators some $250 billion in improper transactions tied to Iran. The bank said that total amount that didn't adhere to U.S. sanction laws was less than $14 million.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A team of researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, led by Dr. Mark W. Jackson, have developed a novel method to identify genes that, when overexpressed, make normal cells behave like cancer cells. Using this method, the Jackson laboratory has identified a new oncogene, which is a gene that contributes to the development of cancer, named FAM83B.

"We made our discovery in a model of breast cancer," said Mark W. Jackson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Using an unbiased screening approach, we let the biology of cancer formation tell us what genes are important and FAM83B was one of the genes that came out of our screen. When FAM83B was overproduced in normal breast cells, it transformed the normal cells, causing them to behave like breast cancer," stated Jackson.

There are relatively few oncogenes that are critical to breast cancer growth, and only one other breast cancer oncogene has been identified in the last 6 years. Breast cancers are classified clinically into subgroups based on the presence of specific proteins, including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2.

"Analysis of breast cancer revealed that elevated FAM83B expression is associated with the more aggressive, triple negative subgroup which lacks ER, PR and HER2," said Jackson. "In short, patients with triple-negative breast cancer would benefit most from the development of new therapeutics."

Novel oncogenes provide opportunities for drug development that may expand the number of therapies available for eradicating cancer and extending the life of patients. "Our discovery provides the foundation for developing new therapies that can inhibit FAM83B in these aggressive cancers, which have traditionally been difficult to treat." We are currently trying to identify drugs that that can inhibit the function of FAM83B." stated Jackson.

This study will appear in The Journal of Clinical Investigation and will be co-published with a discovery from the laboratory of Dr. Mina Bissell at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratories. Dr. Bissell's laboratory discovered an oncogene called FAM83A. Both FAM83A and FAM83B belong to an eight member family of genes that both laboratories propose may drive tumor formation and therapeutic resistance.

FDA OKS Lucentis for diabetes-related eye disorder

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Roche's injectable eye drug Lucentis for a new use in treating a diabetes-related condition that can cause blindness.

The agency cleared the drug for diabetic macular edema, a condition that causes swelling and blurred vision in patients with diabetes. In 2010, 3.9 million adults with diabetes reported vision problems, according to the FDA.

Lucentis is currently marketed for wet, age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness among the elderly. The drug has been facing new competition in that market from Regeneron Pharmaceutical's Eylea, which is cheaper and can be administered with fewer injections.

Side effects with Lucentis include bleeding around the tissue that lines the eyelids and increased pressure on the eyes.

Lucentis is manufactured by Roche's Genentech unit

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? A scientist who worked on the Mars orbiters is scheduled to speak about his work o an astronomy group Sunday in Wilmington.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that Dr. R. Todd Clancy speaks at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wilmington, 4313 Lake Ave., across from Roland-Grise Middle School.

He plans to speak to the Cape Fear Astronomical Society at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wilmington. The topic is ?Roving the Surface of Mars: Past the Future.? The public is invited.

Clancy is a senior scientist with the Space Science Institute. The Raleigh native worked on experiments for the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Much of his research on Martian climate and atmospheric chemistry is based on work from Earth-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Clancy graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.

'Cry' of a shredded star heralds a new era for testing relativity

Last year, astronomers discovered a quiescent black hole in a distant galaxy that erupted after shredding and consuming a passing star. Now researchers have identified a distinctive X-ray signal observed in the days following the outburst that comes from matter on the verge of falling into the black hole.

This tell-tale signal, called a quasi-periodic oscillation or QPO, is a characteristic feature of the accretion disks that often surround the most compact objects in the universe -- white dwarf stars, neutron stars and black holes. QPOs have been seen in many stellar-mass black holes, and there is tantalizing evidence for them in a few black holes that may have middleweight masses between 100 and 100,000 times the sun's.

Until the new finding, QPOs had been detected around only one supermassive black hole -- the type containing millions of solar masses and located at the centers of galaxies. That object is the Seyfert-type galaxy REJ 1034+396, which at a distance of 576 million light-years lies relatively nearby.

"This discovery extends our reach to the innermost edge of a black hole located billions of light-years away, which is really amazing. This gives us an opportunity to explore the nature of black holes and test Einstein's relativity at a time when the universe was very different than it is today," said Rubens Reis, an Einstein Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Reis led the team that uncovered the QPO signal using data from the orbiting Suzaku and XMM-Newton X-ray telescopes, a finding described in a paper published today in Science Express.

The X-ray source known as Swift J1644+57 -- after its astronomical coordinates in the constellation Draco -- was discovered on March 28, 2011, by NASA's Swift satellite. It was originally assumed to be a more common type of outburst called a gamma-ray burst, but its gradual fade-out matched nothing that had been seen before. Astronomers soon converged on the idea that what they were seeing was the aftermath of a truly extraordinary event -- the awakening of a distant galaxy's dormant black hole as it shredded and gobbled up a passing star. The galaxy is so far away that light from the event had to travel 3.9 billion years before reaching Earth.

The star experienced intense tides as it reached its closest point to the black hole and was quickly torn apart. Some of its gas fell toward the black hole and formed a disk around it. The innermost part of this disk was rapidly heated to temperatures of millions of degrees, hot enough to emit X-rays. At the same time, through processes still not fully understood, oppositely directed jets perpendicular to the disk formed near the black hole. These jets blasted matter outward at velocities greater than 90 percent the speed of light along the black hole's spin axis. One of these jets just happened to point straight at Earth.

Nine days after the outburst, Reis, Strohmayer and their colleagues observed Swift J1644+57 using Suzaku, an X-ray satellite operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency with NASA participation. About ten days later, they then began a longer monitoring campaign using the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory.

"Because matter in the jet was moving so fast and was angled nearly into our line of sight, the effects of relativity boosted its X-ray signal enough that we could catch the QPO, which otherwise would be difficult to detect at so great a distance," said Tod Strohmayer, an astrophysicist and co-author of the study at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

As hot gas in the innermost disk spirals toward a black hole, it reaches a point astronomers refer to as the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). Any closer to the black hole and gas rapidly plunges into the event horizon, the point of no return. The inward spiraling gas tends to pile up around the ISCO, where it becomes tremendously heated and radiates a flood of X-rays. The brightness of these X-rays varies in a pattern that repeats at a nearly regular interval, creating the QPO signal.

The data show that Swift J1644+57's QPO cycled every 3.5 minutes, which places its source region between 2.2 and 5.8 million miles (4 to 9.3 million km) from the center of the black hole, the exact distance depending on how fast the black hole is rotating. To put this in perspective, the maximum distance is only about 6 times the diameter of our sun. The distance from the QPO region to the event horizon also depends on rotation speed, but for a black hole spinning at the maximum rate theory allows, the horizon is just inside the ISCO.

"QPOs send us information from the very brim of the black hole, which is where the effects of relativity become most extreme," Reis said. "The ability to gain insight into these processes over such a vast distance is a truly beautiful result and holds great promise."

University reviews its dealings with accused theater gunman

DENVER (Reuters) - The University of Colorado has hired a former federal prosecutor to probe its handling of a former graduate student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 in a shooting spree at a movie theater in a Denver suburb, the school said on Friday.

Robert Miller was retained to conduct an internal review of the university's dealings with accused gunman and former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes, the university said in a written statement.

Holmes was charged this week with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder for the shootings at the July 20 midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.

Questions have arisen about what the university knew about Holmes' mental state in the weeks leading up to the massacre.

His attorneys said a court filing that he was a patient of Dr. Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist who is medical director for student health services at the university's Denver campus.

The judge presiding over the case has imposed a gag order preventing involved parties from publicly discussing the case, but Fox News, citing an anonymous source, reported that Holmes had sent a notebook, which was not opened, to Fenton detailing his plans for the massacre.

Also citing anonymous sources, the Denver Post reported Thursday that Fenton had notified the school's threat assessment team about behavior by Holmes, 24, that she found alarming.

Miller is a former U.S. Attorney and Judge Advocate General for the U.S. Air Force who is now in private practice.

"They have been asked to assess various university systems, procedures and actions related to the suspect," the university said.

The review, which began last week, was requested by University of Colorado Denver chancellor Donald Elliman, who earlier said he believed university personnel "did what they should have done" in dealing with Holmes.

"Our resolve rests with understanding all the facts so we can assist law enforcement and other authorities in ensuring that justice prevails," Elliman said in a statement announcing the review.

The university put no timeline on Miller's report, and said it is unclear how much of the information it could release publicly because of the gag order and student privacy laws.

Holmes, who authorities say told police that he was the Joker, in reference to Batman's comic-book foe, is being held in solitary confinement and without bond in the Arapahoe County jail.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) ? A military judge on Friday once again held the Fort Hood shooting suspect in contempt of court for showing up to a pretrial hearing with a beard he had been ordered to shave.

Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was fined $1,000 for a second time. The judge, Col. Gregory Gross, then sent Hasan to a nearby trailer to watch the rest of the hearing on closed-circuit television, as he has done since showing up with a beard at a June hearing.

Beards are a violation of Army regulations. Hasan's attorneys say he keeps declining to shave because he believes that doing so would violate his Muslim faith.

Last week, the judge held Hasan in contempt and fined him $1,000. Gross said Hasan would be forcibly shaved at some point before his Aug. 20 trial if he doesn't shave the beard himself. He said he wants Hasan in the courtroom during the court-martial to prevent a possible appeal on the issue if he is convicted.

Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the November 2009 attack on the Texas Army post. Hasan, 41, faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted.

Gross on Friday also ordered a pretrial hearing next week to hear from a prosecution witness and determine if he will testify during the trial. Defense attorneys are challenging the validity of the expert witness, who plans to testify that Hasan is a "homegrown terrorist," according to previous pretrial hearing discussions. A defense expert witness may testify at the hearing to counter the prosecution team's witness.

Gross also approved a defense request for another expert to testify about extenuating circumstances and mitigating factors regarding Hasan's re-commitment to his religious conversion. Prosecutors had objected, saying the defense team already has a mitigation expert and was trying to make the trial more favorable to their client.

Bristol-Myers suspends hepatitis C treatment study

Drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. is suspending a midstage study of a potential hepatitis C treatment after at least one patient suffered heart failure.

The New York company hasn't determined the cause or whether it is tied to the potential treatment, so it is examining all patients who took the drug.

"We are working in close collaboration with clinical trial investigators and health authorities to ensure the appropriate steps are being taken to protect patient safety," spokeswoman Sonia Choi said Thursday in an email to The Associated Press.

Shares of Bristol-Myers plunged 7.6 percent, or $2.70, to $32.90 in midday trading Thursday.

The drugmaker is an important maker of medicines for viruses, including Baraclude for hepatitis B and several HIV drugs. It is searching for fresh sources of revenue because its top-selling product, the blood thinner Plavix, now faces competition in the United States from cheaper generic drugs. Plavix sales plummeted 60 percent to $741 million in the second quarter after several generic rivals debuted in May.

As part of that plan, Bristol-Myers is pushing to become a player in the hepatitis C drug market, which is expected to grow as baby boomers get older.

The drug, labeled BMS-986094, is one of two main potential hepatitis C treatments from Bristol-Myers that investors are focused on, Bernstein analyst Dr. Tim Anderson said in a research note. The other is a compound labeled daclatasvir that has started late-stage testing, the last step before drugmakers submit a product to regulators for approval.

Anderson said it seemed likely that BMS-986094 also would move to late-stage testing next year, but its prospects are now uncertain.

Cardiovascular problems can prove fatal to experimental drugs. The Food and Drug Administration has been focusing more on those risks since Merck & Co. took its painkiller Vioxx off the market several years ago after a study showed the drug doubled the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Bristol-Myers acquired BMS-986094 and some other potential treatments as part of a $2.5 billion acquisition of drug developer Inhibitex Inc. it completed earlier this year.

Analyst Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, said the study suspension makes the Inhibitex acquisition look like a mistake for Bristol-Myers.

Hepatitis C is a virus that can lead to life-threatening liver damage and is the main cause of liver transplants in the United States. Analysts say the market for treatments is potentially lucrative for drugmakers. More people are expected to be diagnosed with the tough-to-treat disease as the baby boomer generation ages.

After a two-decade drought, the first two new hepatitis C drugs were approved last year: Victrelis from Merck & Co. and Incivek from Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Johnson & Johnson. Both significantly improve the cure rate over what has long been the standard of care, a mix of injections and pills with nasty, flu-like side effects that takes several months and still doesn't cure many patients.

Spain judge questions 3 arrested al-Qaida suspects

MADRID (AP) ? Three alleged al-Qaida suspects with possible plans for an attack in Spain or elsewhere in Europe have arrived at Spain's National Court for questioning by a judge.

Police with automatic weapons closed streets as the suspects arrived in a police van. The judge was expected to decide Friday after the closed-door hearing if they will remain detained.

A Russian, a Russian of Chechen descent and a Turk were arrested Wednesday. The Turk was arrested in the southern city of La Linea bordering the British colony of Gibraltar. The Russians were picked up traveling by bus toward the French border.

Authorities say enough explosive material was found in the La Linea house where the Turk lived to blow up a bus. Authorities found evidence suggesting they were experimenting with ultralight planes.

Robin Roberts takes a few weeks from 'GMA'

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts is taking a little time off, saying she's feeling the effects of her blood and bone marrow disease.

Roberts said Tuesday that she's "not feeling too well" and would take some time off "just to get some vacay."

ABC said Roberts would be taking a few weeks of previously scheduled time off, but it came earlier than her planned medical leave for a bone marrow transplant. Roberts told reporters last week that her medical leave would probably start at the end of August or early September.

Roberts announced last month that she has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia.
